Building a Future on Strong Lines: Caleb Stewart’s Journey with the William & Elizabeth Scholarship

When Caleb Stewart enrolled in the Global Power Line Academy, he knew it wouldn’t be easy. The 10-week lineman program demanded grit, focus, and a willingness to push past limits. “I went into the program nervous and expecting it to be extremely hard—a lot of climbing, and a lot of dedication,” he said. His expectations were spot on.

The instructors—three experienced and patient teachers—set a high bar for the students, blending serious training with humor and encouragement. “They were a lot of fun to learn from and very funny,” Caleb shared. “That made the hard work a little easier.”

Within a week of graduating, Caleb’s effort paid off. Henkels & McCoy, a respected utility construction company, visited the academy to observe students in action—and hired Caleb almost immediately. He credits his success to the school’s strong reputation and, as he humbly added, “a tad bit of my interviewing skills.”

A Scholarship That Powers Opportunity

Caleb’s path was made possible through the William & Elizabeth Scholarship, established in 2021 to support students from Venango County pursuing education in the trades, apprenticeships, applied technology, or nursing. The fund’s founders wanted to open doors for students whose talents shine brightest through hands-on learning.

Since its creation, the William & Elizabeth Scholarship has disbursed over $140,000 to 22 individual students, with an average award of $6,000—making it one of the largest scholarships managed by Bridge Builders Community Foundations. Each award represents more than just financial aid—it’s an investment in practical skills, steady careers, and the future of the local workforce.

For Caleb, that investment has already changed his life. “The best part of the experience,” he said, “is that I quickly got to learn a skill that will always be around and will financially take care of me the rest of my life.”

Creating a Path for Hands-On Learners

Caleb’s story underscores the importance of recognizing all types of learners—especially those who excel outside traditional college classrooms. “This whole process was possible because of Bridge Builders and the generous donors,” he shared. “I hope they are able to continue this for other kids who are not college bound, or don’t always get the best grades, or aren’t the smartest with books but are great at learning from doing something with their hands.”

By supporting scholarships like the William & Elizabeth Scholarship, donors make it possible for students like Caleb to find success in fields that keep our communities running—literally, in his case, along the power lines that connect homes and businesses across Pennsylvania.
