When Ryleigh Henry graduated from Franklin High School, she already knew she wanted a career that made a difference in people’s lives. Inspired by her love of science and her passion for helping others, she enrolled at Slippery Rock University as a Biology major in the Pre-Physician Assistant Program.
For Ryleigh, the path toward becoming a Physician Assistant is both challenging and exciting — and the Eugene F. Hanna Scholarship helped make it possible.
A Legacy of Local Support
The Eugene F. Hanna Scholarship was established in 1981 through the Will of Eugene F. Hanna, who wanted to ensure that students from Franklin High School had the opportunity to continue their education. His generosity created a legacy that has now supported students for more than four decades, helping them turn their academic goals into achievable realities.
While the exact total of scholarships awarded over the years is hard to calculate, in recent years one Franklin High School senior has received between $2,500 and $3,000 each year. That support often comes at a pivotal moment — when new graduates are just beginning their college journey and learning to balance independence, academics, and finances.
“Scholarships like this one can be the difference between a student having to work extra hours and being able to truly focus on their studies,” said a BBCF representative. “That’s what Eugene F. Hanna envisioned — creating opportunities that ripple forward through generations.”
Building Confidence and Community
At Slippery Rock, Ryleigh quickly found her footing — thanks in part to a supportive academic environment. “I really love how supportive the faculty are!” she said. “During finals week they had stress-relieving activities, grab-and-go snacks, and reserved study spaces just for biology majors.”
She also appreciates how the university invests in helping students plan ahead. “It’s so easy to access information about the graduate program,” she said. “They’re always hosting Q&A sessions and seminars so that undergraduates can learn more about the program.”
Those small details have made a big impact on Ryleigh’s experience, giving her the confidence and structure she needs to thrive.
Freedom to Grow and Give Back
The Eugene F. Hanna Scholarship also gave Ryleigh the freedom to truly enjoy her first semester. “Earning scholarships allowed me so much freedom,” she said. “I didn’t have to worry about getting a job right away to pay for school. I was able to join clubs and really get involved on campus.”
That freedom to participate and explore is part of what makes scholarships so valuable. They don’t just pay for classes — they open the door to leadership experiences, community involvement, and personal growth that shape a student’s entire college career.
Continuing a Tradition of Opportunity
Every time a Franklin High School graduate like Ryleigh receives support from the Eugene F. Hanna Scholarship, it reinforces the power of local philanthropy. What began as one man’s generous act has now touched countless lives — and continues to do so through the Bridge Builders Community Foundations network.
By contributing to the Eugene F. Hanna Scholarship Fund, donors help ensure that this tradition continues for the next generation of Franklin students — students who, like Ryleigh, are ready to learn, grow, and give back to their communities.
